Why We Need The Q52 Extended

Anyone living in Far Rockaway knows how much of a nightmare it can be trying to head into the outer boroughs or to the other side of Queens for that matter. For those who reside in on the eastern side of the Peninsula you have two options for getting to the other side of Queens: a train and a bus or two buses. But no matter which one you choose it will take you almost two hours to get there.

For years having to take that route was a huge disadvantage, it would take me almost two hours to get to the movies, the mall or just to see my friends who lived in places like Jamaica or Astoria. Since the introduction of the Q52 I have been able to cut my travel time in half, and while the bus stop is only a five minute walk from my home, there is still a large part of the community that can’t reap the benefits.

With the last stop being at 67th St. the Q52 only services 20 percent of the Rockaway population, extending the route would bring faster service to an area where almost half of the households lack personal vehicles, and where workers rely on transit for their commutes which often take an hour or more.

The extension would provide faster service and a one-seat ride to over 61,000 Rockaway residents who currently only have local service on the Q22 and the inconsistent Far Rockaway A train. Extending the bus line would provide residents with multiple options and would potentially lead to less crowding on buses and trains.
But most importantly the extension would provide Rockaway youth, who come from low to moderate income families, with direct access to central Queens, providing an easier and faster route to schools, various activities and job opportunities.

Thus, we ask for the support of Rockaway, New York City, and the World in our push to extend vital service to Rockaway residents.

I would say that some of the people in Long Beach, and Southwestern Nassau County would reduce their intinerary if the Q52 LIMITED was extended to FAR ROCKAWAY.

This means a direct transfer to/from NICE Bus to the Q52 at Mott Avenue which would take them directly along the Woodhaven Blvd corridor and to Elmhurst near Queens Center Mall.

The other option for these folks is to take the A train to Rockaway Blvd and then board a Q11, Q21, Q52 or Q53 to finish their trip, or find their way to Jamaica for the E and F trains, or shell out the money for the LIRR to either Kew Gardens, Forest Hills or Woodside, which is something that the people do not have.

The extension of the Q52 will benefit majority A train users which would comprehend the struggle and intensity of taking the train which doesn’t show up as frequently as expected. Another benefit rockaway users will have is the mentioned conection between nice busses and q22 which is major convienence and time saving for nassau and far rockaway residence
